A Bronx woman was arraigned on charges connected to six break-ins in Westchester, allegedly having targeted people while they were away at a wake or funeral.
What We Know:
- Latonia Shelecia Stewart was charged Wednesday for six break-ins between fall 2017 and spring 2018; Stewart allegedly found her targets by looking in obituaries and burglarizing the homes of the dead person’s loved ones while they were at the funeral.
- Stewart was finally caught on May 1, 2018, during a police surveillance operation as she attempted to burglarize another home, and stolen goods from a previous burglary were found in her car. Stewart’s daughter was also in the car when she was caught by police attempting another burglary, and an obituary was saved on her cellphone.
- Stewart is charged with 22 counts of burglary, grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, petit larceny, criminal mischief, possession of burglar’s tools and three motor vehicle violations. Those affected claim Stewart stole jewelry and other personal items and broke windows and glass doors to enter.
- District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino Jr. released the results of the investigation on Stewart Thursday detailing the charges brought against Stewart and the details of her arrest. “It’s enough of a tragedy that a family has lost a loved one, they shouldn’t have their home violated or lose their belongings as well,” Scarpino said. The investigation was done by the Greenburgh Police and the District Attorney’s Office Investigations Division.
Stewart is scheduled to next appear in court August 13.
