Joaquin Guzmán, aka “El Chapo”, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 30 years.
What We Know:
- A federal judge in Brooklyn, N.Y has sentenced El Chapo to a term of life for his role in leading Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel. U.S prosecutors have asked that three decades also be added onto Guzmán’s life sentence.
- Guzmán’s conviction includes 10 counts of crimes such as narcotics trafficking, using a firearm in drug crimes and money laundering.
- Assistant Attorney General Brian Benczkowiski said, “Sending Guzmán to prison will bring a measure of justice to people in both the U.S and Mexico who have been affected by his crimes.
- According to National Public Radio, “Days after Guzmán was found guilty in a NewYork courtroom, U.S authorities indicted two of his sons Joaquín Guzmán Lopez and Ovidio Guzmán Lopez in Mexico.”
Guzmán claims members of the jury had read about his trial outside of court proceedings. He plans to appeal his trial.
