Civil Rights Organization is Honoring Hillary Clinton this Weekend

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference will honor Hillary Clinton at an annual convention in Atlanta.

What We Know:

  • The former Secretary of State, First Lady and Democratic party presidential candidate will receive the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s Realizing the Dream Award.
  • “Mrs. Clinton has been close to us ever since I have been president of SCLC,” said Charles Steele. “She has always been supportive of the work that we do and has always been a good role model.” Clinton lost the 2016 presidential race to Donald Trump. Trump beat her by 5 points in Georgia, but Clinton won every core metro Atlanta county.
  • Steele said that only a few of the several candidates pursuing the 2020 Democratic nomination have talked about poverty and the wealth gap. He invited the candidates to speak at the convention, but none have confirmed, according to the Atlantic Journal-Constitution.
  • The theme of this year’s convention is “Maintaining the Global Village: Housing, Health and Our Common Humanity.” Steele said the organization will announce their plans for a new program that provides affordable housing in neglected areas of the United States. He claims black American wealth was cut in half “when we lost our homes during the housing crisis more than a decade ago.”
  • The event will  also praise civil rights legends and individuals fighting for those who live in poverty.

The SCLC’s 61st annual convention will be hosted in Atlanta July 18-20 at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta. Clinton will be presented the Realizing the Dream award at the SCLC Women’s Empowerment Luncheon on July 19.
