President Obama Pens Letter To Woman Who Receives Clemency And Returned To College

Former President Barack Obama pens a note to a woman who received clemency in 2016 and retuned to college where she made Dean’s List.

What We Know:

  • In 2016, President Barack Obama commuted Danielle Metz sentenced and she was released from prison. Metz was sentenced in 1993 at the age of 26 to three life sentences plus an additional 20 years for her role in a cocaine trafficking ring ran by her husband.
  • In prison, Metz earned her GED. Soon after Obama commuted Metz’ sentence, she enrolled in Southern University in New Orleans.
  • According to NBCNews, “Metz told the Hechinger Report, a nonprofit organization that reports on education, that she wished she could thank Obama. You don’t know what you did for me, I’m finally coming into my own, I made honor roll.”
  • Last week Metz received a handwritten letter from Obama.
