Tia Mowry has a Netflix Comedy, Family Reunion, with All-Black Writers Room

Netflix will have its first African-American family sitcom with the show, “Family Reunion.”

What We Know:

  • The show features Tia Mowry, who starred in “Sister Sister” and “The Game”, and Emmy-winning actress Loretta Devine who is known for her dramatic work in “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Waiting to Exhale.”
  • In this upcoming Netflix series, Mowry plays a Seattle mom named Cocoa McKellan with four kids from ages 8 to 16, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. They attend a family reunion in Columbus, GA and have so much fun, that they decide to move there.
  • Cocoa’s husband Moz (Anthony Alabi) is pegged as a momma’s boy and a former pro athlete. Moz’s mom, M’Dear, is played by Devine. M’Dear is appalled that the family does not attend church despite the fact Moz’s dad, played by “Shaft” legend Richard Roundtree, is a pastor.
  • Mowry said she finds it easy to relate to her Cocoa character. “She’s non-judgmental. She shares clothes with her daughter. That’s how I am in real life. It’s refreshing and fun to see this non-traditional family being put in this fish-out-of-water situation,” Mowry told AJC.
  • She also spoke about the show’s unapologetic black culture references and how Netflix allows its creatives to have a lot of wiggle room. “Netflix gives a lot of freedom in regards to creating your own voice,” Mowry said. In fact, the writers’ room for this sitcom is all black. “All these writers have lived the moments in the stories. It’s all very real, down to the dialogue.”

The first season is now available.
