South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg raised $24.8 million during the second fundraising quarter of 2019, his campaign announced Monday.
What We Know:
- The money came from more than 294,000 donors who gave an average of $47.42, the campaign said. This announcement comes as the other candidates prepare to release their fundraising numbers for the second quarter, which must be reported to the Federal Elections Commission.
- In an email to supporters, the campaign said it “more than doubled the amount of total individual donors to the campaign between Q1 and Q2,” bringing in 230,000 new donors and boosting the number of total donors to more than 400,000.
- “Thank you to the over 400,000 of you who have invested in this campaign, and who helped us raise over $24,800,000 this quarter alone,” Buttigieg announced on Twitter.
- Buttigieg’s second quarter was substantially higher than the first quarter where he raised a little over $7 million. During this time, he was outraised by Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Kamala Harris of California. Sanders and Harris raised $18 million and $12 million respectively, according to NBC News. President Trump brought in $30 million in that quarter.
- Former Vice President Joe Biden did not announce his presidential bid until the second quarter but suggested at an event earlier this month that he raised nearly $20 million since joining the race. Additionally, former Texas Rep. Beto O’ Rourke raised more than $9 million during the first quarter.
Despite this gain, Buttigieg still faces a challenge in growing support with black voters especially after a white cop fatally shot a black man in South Bend.
