Need to Know: G20 Summit, Putin Meeting, Xi and Trump Talks

During the Group of 20 Summit, President Donald Trump plans to meet with leaders from various countries and discuss important geopolitical topics.

What We Know:

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump met for an hour-long meeting. Before the private meeting took place, Trump jokingly told Putin not to meddle in the 2020 presidential election after Putin invited Trump to the World War II commemoration in Moscow. It is unclear if he will attend the commemoration since he faces scrutiny about the way he handles relations with Russia.
  • On Friday afternoon, Trump voiced his optimism about upcoming trade talks with China. Trump said the planned meeting with China’s top leader, Xi Jinping, would be productive. “At a minimum, it will be productive — we’ll see what happens and what comes out of it,” Trump said.
  • A Chinese official hopes to accelerate talks about a regional free trade agreement for the southern Pacific, East and South Asia, according to the New York Times. The sit-down between Trump and Xi is perhaps the most anticipated one after Trump increased tariffs on China after trade talks broke down in April.
  • During a working dinner, Trump met with newly elected center-right Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Trump endorsed Australia’s immigration policies on his Twitter ahead of the sit-down with Morrison. He wrote “much can be learned” from the country’s approach to this policy.

The results of these meetings have the potential to shift the course of Trump’s foreign policy as the 2020 presidential race is underway.
