Supreme Court rejects Trump’s attempt to fast track immigrants out

DACA
The Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration’s request to quickly come to a decision on their appeal.

What We Know:

  • On Monday, the Supreme Court rejected a request from the Trump administration in regards to removing DACA permanently. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival, aka DACA, is an initiative created by former President Barack Obama. The program allows children of illegal immigrants to stay in the United States if they were under 16 when their parents arrived, or if they arrived before 2007.
  • For the past two years, the Trump administration has been trying to remove the program. They appealed a block to to their efforts in November, and before Monday, the Supreme Court had yet to make a decision.
  • Federal courts in California, New York, Maryland and Washington D.C. stand with DACA. These courts have also ruled that the program cannot be shut down as the government continues to accept biannual renewal applications. An immigrant support group in Maryland explained why the Supreme Court couldn’t rush their decision on this case. “No court to consider the issue has held that DACA is unlawful. Because there is no violation of federal law, there is and can be no harm,” they said.
  • It’s not surprising that the Trump administration views the program as illegal. Throughout his term, Trump has been picking on immigrants. He blames them for drug issues in America and ultimately feels they don’t belong here. Along with the approval of the wall, it only makes sense that he would try to get rid of the immigrants that already live here.
Despite his efforts, luckily, the Supreme Court stopped Trump from uprooting nearly 700,000 lives. But, this story is still developing because he seems to always find another way.
