The Detroit Police Department are launching an internal investigation on a case of racial profiling.
What We Know:
- Christopher Williams, a veteran officer, was at Detroit’s police training center to log his hours on June 6th. There were around 100 officers in plainclothes there, including his girlfriend who is also an officer.
- Williams’ girlfriend made a withdrawal of around $5000 for bills and gave it to Williams to hold. Williams first encountered the white officer in the bathroom, where he saw him put the money in his pocket.
- The officer confronted Williams in the parking as he was leaving. The unnamed officer threw Williams against a fence and handcuffed him. According to Williams, the officer stated “you’re not supposed to have that kind of money”. He let Williams go after his girlfriend showed him the withdrawal receipt.
- Assistant Chief Police James White released a statement about the incident. He stated that he’s “not asserting blame prematurely”. “I’d like to see what happened.” White also mentioned that he’s not concerned about the race of the officers until the officer’s actions prove to have been racially motivated.
