The preliminary Harriet Tubman $20 bill design has been released.
What We Know:
- The $20 bill was supposed to be released in 2020 but Steven Mnuchin, Secretary of the US Treasury, postponed the release until at least 2026 (originally postponed to 2028) stating security measures as the reason. Alternatively, Trump stated “pure political correctness” as the reason and suggested putting Tubman on the $2 bill.
- The new $20 bill was proposed by President Barack Obama‘s last Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew and went through preliminary research and design prior to Trump taking office with the initial design completed in late 2016.
- After the postponement, designer Dano Wall created a Harriet Tubman stamp in lieu of the new bill being released.
- The New York Times obtained an image of the work done on the bill causing confusion as to why there is such a delay in it’s release. Especially since a current employee mentioned seeing a metal engraving plate and digital image of the bill in May 2018.
- On the bill redesign, Tubman can be seen wearing a dark coat and white scarf and smiling…something she didn’t really do in photos so we’re not exactly sure how it ended up in the design.
