A DeKalb County high school student who recently joined the dance team died Monday after passing out during a workout.
What We Know:
- 17-year-old Elyse Purefoy was at Arabia Mountain High School when she collapsed on the track during a summer conditioning practice for her dance team, according to Channel 2 Action News. Her father, Hank Purefoy told the news outlet that his daughter was heading into her senior year of high school.
- Her teammates noticed her pass out after running on the track. She was then rushed to DeKalb Medical Center where she died.
- “The entire DeKalb County School District community, and especially the Arabia Mountain High School family, mourns the passing of a member of the school’s dance team. Our hearts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time,” the school district said in a statement.
- Her cause of death is unknown, but her brother, Malik, said officials are looking at two possible causes: severe dehydration or an undiagnosed heart problem.
The Purefoy family created a GoFundMe to raise money for her funeral.
