A Maryland couple was found dead in their hotel room in the Dominican Republic on Thursday, May 30, just five days after a woman was found dead in the same hotel.
What We Know…
- An employee of the hotel they were staying in, the Bahia Principe Hotel in La Romana, found Edward Holmes and Cynthia Day dead in their hotel room after they missed their checkout.
- Later reports from the Dominican Republic National Police say the couple died of respiratory failure, exposed after an autopsy. The condition was caused by excess fluid in the lungs.
- The Dominican National Police said there is no evidence of violence. A hotel employee reported that Holmes had contacted the front desk saying he felt ill but did not accept treatment.
- Holmes and Day were engaged and scheduled to marry once they returned home.
- Before the autopsy concluded, this event is being linked to when Delaware woman Tammy Lawrence-Daley claimed she was attacked at her resort in the Dominican Republic in January. Similar stories of mysterious deaths of Americans visiting the Dominican Republic have since risen.
- The United States State Department issued a travel advisory for the Dominican Republic in April due to heightened crime in the area.
- A woman from Pennsylvania died just five days before Holmes and Day in the same hotel; Miranda Schaup-Werner was found dead in her room after reportedly having a mixed bottle of alcohol with soda from the minibar. She mysteriously collapsed and died shortly after.
- Schaup-Werner’s cause of death is also respiratory failure and pulmonary edema.
The nation remains confused and afraid of a seeming chain of mysterious deaths in the Dominican Republic.
