Tupac Mosley, Homeless Teen from Tennessee Graduates as Valedictorian

Tupac Mosley, 17, received a text from his mother Tuesday asking if he felt overwhelmed after receiving $3 million in scholarships and the honor of high school valedictorian.

What We Know:

  • Mosley, a once-homeless Memphis teen, said his father died at the end of his sophomore year. After his father’s passing came financial struggles. Principals, teachers and other staff began reaching out to him.
  • Mosley, from Raleigh Egypt High School, received more than 50 scholarships before he graduated in May.
  • He said he was accepted into more than 40 colleges, and he’s chosen Tennessee State University, where he hopes to major in electrical engineering. Mosley then told the news outlets that he aimed to garner about 1 million in scholarships.
  • Mosley said, “I knew I had to make my mother and teachers proud. I knew that their investment was worth it and to just show them that yes, everything that you poured into me was worth $3 million and counting. Never let your current situation, whatever circumstances you’re going through, be a mountain you can’t climb.”
  • In his speech at graduation on May 19, he expressed gratitude to his teachers for believing in him.

As a strong minded student, being homeless didn’t stop him from his studies or his quest to continue to college. BNA wishes you the best at Tennessee State University!
