Uzo Aduba will play the role of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm in a show centered around a strong female lead.
What We Know…
- The show, called “Mrs. America,” follows the first black woman to be elected in Congress Shirley Chisholm played by Aduba. The show will be produced by Emmy-Award-Winning Dahvi Waller, who produced “Madmen,” with a team of other successful producers.
- FX released a press release explaining that “the series explores how one of the toughest battlegrounds in the culture wars of the 70s…forever shifted our political landscape.”
- Chisholm was the first black woman elected into Congress in 1969 in New York and she is largely accredited with paving the way for contemporary female politicians like Hillary Clinton. Chisholm was also the first woman to run on the Democratic presidential platform when she ran for the bid for president in 1972.
- Viola Davis has also taken on the role of Chisholm in her film produced with Amazon Studios, “The Fighting Shirley Chisholm.” While similar in content, the FX series will focus on the movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment Chisholm was a part of.
- Aduba herself has made history in the world of acting, winning the SAG Award for Best Actress in Comedy in 2015 and 2016 and Emmy Awards in 2014 and 2015; she is celebrated for her role in “Orange is the New Black.”
- FX has also mentioned Cate Blanchett, Margo Martindale, Tracey Ullman and many other successful female actors will also be cast in the show.
