Brenda Mayes, a Utah mom, is suing Davis School District after her bi-racial son was intentionally trapped in the doors of a school bus.
What We Know:
- In a video, the student is seen attempting to exit the school bus when the bus driver suddenly closes the doors before he gets out of the doorway. The student is clearly trapped by his backpack in the doors but the driver takes off with the student stuck to the moving vehicle. The vehicle continues to move several feet before stopping, opening the doors and freeing the student.
- According to the Salt Lake Tribune, there have been previous reports of the bus driver, John Naisbitt, “targeting multiracial students.” He has allegedly closed doors on other multiracial students in the past. Brenda Mayes says the school administrators knew of the previous allegations but never disciplined the driver.
- Mayes believes her son was assaulted, harassed and discriminated against due to his race. She stated that Mayes ‘knew what he was doing.’
- When asked by Fox 13 if he was racist, Naisbitt said “Not at all. No. Look at my dog. He’s as black as could be.”
- Naisbitt retired shortly after the incident.
The lawsuit is seeking an unknown amount of damages.
