Taylor Swift’s Billboard Music Awards performance has been criticized for copying Beyoncé’s Homecoming performance.
What We Know:
- The Billboard Music Awards were held Wednesday night, and Taylor Swift performed her new single “ME!.” She performed in a pink fringe one piece majorette costume alongside a marching band. After seeing the performance, social media pointed how the performance was strikingly similar to Beyoncé’s Coachella performance.
- To begin the show, Swift had a whistle blown off, her set featured risers and everything was pink. Fans of both singers have been debating whether or not Swift was just inspired by Beyoncé’s performance, or if she blatantly copied her.
- Twitter has been the main source of comments in regards to this story. Two of the most popular tweets came from Courtney Enlow and Matthew Whitlock. “What in the Melania copying Michelle’s speech is this #Mayochella” said Enlow. “The Beyoncé I want vs. the Beyoncé my mom says we have at home” said Whitlock.
- Many of Swift’s fans argued how this was not her first using a marching band during a performance. There has also been multiple celebrities who were accompanied by full bands. Prince used a marching band during his 2007 Super Bowl half-time show, Gwen Stefani opened the 2005 Teen Choice Awards with a band to perform “Hollaback Girl,” and Madonna featured a drumlins during her “MDNA” tour in 2012.
The performance has been dubbed #Mayochella and fans continue to point out how this isn’t Swift’s first offense. Despite all the controversy, Swift remains silent.
