Former Vice President Joe Biden had a long awaited conversation with Anita Hill apologizing for the way she was treated during her sexual harassment senate hearing.
What We Know:
- In 1991, Anita Hill accused Clarence Thomas, then supreme court justice elect, of sexual harassment and president elect Joe Biden presided over the resulting senate judiciary committee and special hearing.
- Biden, after learning Hill had been waiting for at least a call from him with an apology, had a conversation arranged with her in which he expressed his regrets stating he’s “sorry she was treated the way she was treated.”
- Biden’s deputy campaign manager stated that they had a private discussion where he shared with her directly his regret for what she endured and his administration for everything she has done to change the culture around sexual harassment in this country.
- Hill replied by stating that she cannot be satisfied by Biden simply saying that he is sorry for what happened to her. “I will be satisfied when I know there is a real change, real accountability, and real purpose.”
- Hill jeopardized her career and her reputation by accusing Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment but has ultimately become a trailblazer in the fight to protect women’s rights and the need for cultural changes around sexual harassment.
- In a recent interview Biden stated, “To this day I regret I couldn’t come up with a way to get her the kind of hearing she deserved, given the kind of courage she showed reaching out to us…Not only didn’t I vote for Clarence Thomas, I believed her from the beginning. I was against Clarence Thomas, I did everything in my power to defeat Clarence Thomas and he won by the smallest margin anyone ever won going on the Supreme Court.”
